Sébastien Vanlerberghe

Biography

Sébastien Vanlerberghe, Oboe / English horn

Born in Calais, Sébastien Vanlerberghe began his oboe studies at the Saint-Omer conservatoire, before moving on to the Lille conservatoire, where he won several prizes (including the gold medal for oboe in 1994) in André Cailliéret's class. He then went on to perfect his skills with Jean-Louis Capezzali, with whom he won a first prize from the city of Paris.

Alongside his musical studies, he also obtained a master's degree in musicology from Lille III University in Villeneuve d'Ascq in 1997. Winner of the Concours Européen de Musique en Picardie in 1995 and the UFAM in 1996, he joined the Amadeus Chamber Orchestra under Laurent Hirsch, a revelation to him as an orchestral musician, with whom he gave numerous concerts and toured extensively in Canada, China, Japan, Norway and elsewhere.

In January 2002, he was accepted as second oboe/English horn soloist with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra in Belgium. Since then, he has performed under the baton of principal conductors such as Philippe Herreweghe, Daniele Callegari, Jaap van Zweden, Edo de Waart, Elim Chan and now Marc Albrecht, as well as prestigious guest conductors, giving concerts in Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Asia, India and South America.
He is regularly called upon by other orchestras, including the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio-France, the Orchestre National de Lille and the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.

Passionate about teaching, Sébastien has been an oboe teacher at the Conservatoire de Tourcoing since 2007, and an oboe/English horn assistant at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles since 2020, working closely with teacher Eric Speller, who is also a member of the ASO.
His other passion, chamber music, first led him to play with the Ensemble Boreas (wind octet), of which he was a founding member, before moving on to Solis, a wind quintet from the Hauts de France region. He also plays in various formations with his colleagues in the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra.
