Born in Charleroi, Belgium, in 1972, Laurent Haye began his musical studies at the age of nine, embarking on a path that led him to the Conservatoires royaux de Mons and Bruxelles. There, he successively obtained the higher diploma in solfège, two Master’s degrees in chamber music in the class of Roger Bausier and in trombone in the class of Alain Pire, as well as a first prize in music history. Following this classical training, he pursued jazz studies for four years at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles in the class of Phil Abraham. In 2002, he began a Master’s degree in orchestral conducting at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, studying first with Robert Janssens and then with Philippe Gérard. He completed this degree in 2006. From 1993 to 2008, he held the position of principal trombone with Charleroi Opérettes asbl.
In 1996, his “Grande Distinction in Chamber Music” opened the doors of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles to him, where he was appointed lecturer in the chamber music class of Roger Bausier. This position later evolved into that of senior teaching staff, and in 2003 he was also entrusted with the important responsibility of coordinating the Chamber Music Department of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles. Outside the conservatory, Laurent Haye is regularly invited to give advanced trombone masterclasses both in Belgium and abroad.
As an orchestral musician and trombonist, he has taken part in numerous concerts, notably with the Orchestre Royal de Chambre de Wallonie, the Brussels Festival Orchestra, the Brussels Philharmonic Orchestra, the ensemble Ictus, and the orchestra Nuove Musiche. An eclectic musician, he is also active as artistic director of several ensembles with contrasting musical identities, including Charly Bil Swing, a jazz big band, the Fanfare Royale d’Ham sur Heure from 1998 to 2016, Les Sonneurs de Cuivres de Charles le Roy, devoted to repertoire from the Renaissance to the present day, and Trombone Haye Percussions, a duo with his brother, a percussionist, exploring contemporary and avant garde repertoire.
