Pianist, clarinettist and rhythmist, Gilles Carlier develops an eclectic career bridging jazz and classical music. He began studying clarinet at the age of five, followed shortly by piano at the Conservatory of Tournai, before discovering jazz at sixteen — a decisive turning point.
He trained at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles in classical clarinet, jazz piano, music theory and rhythm, and is now active in a wide range of projects with diverse aesthetics. Curious and passionate, he also draws inspiration from world music, notably konnakol, the vocal rhythm tradition of South India, which enriches both his artistic practice and his pedagogy.
He is currently a professor at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles, where he teaches jazz rhythm, ear training and music theory.
