Thomas Baeté (Ostend ’78) studied the viola da gamba in Bruxelles and Barcelone with Wieland Kuijken and Sophie Watillon. He also took advanced masterclasses with Jordi Savall and Paolo Pandolfo.
As a viol player and performer of the medieval fiddle, he has regularly appeared in concert with Mala Punica (Pedro Memelsdorff), Capilla Flamenca (Dirk Snellings), and Graindelavoix (Björn Schmelzer). The baroque orchestras La Petite Bande (Sigiswald Kuijken), Collegium Vocale (Philippe Herreweghe), and Les Agrémens have invited him to perform. He is a permanent member of two viol consorts: the Dutch quartet The Spirit of Gambo and the Hathor Ensemble led by Romina Lischka.
For three seasons, Thomas was welcomed at the Augustinus Muziekcentrum (AMUZ) in Antwerp as an Ami d’Amuz, a young artist invited to develop his own projects. In 2010, he founded his own ensemble, ClubMediéval, a vocal and instrumental group specializing in the repertoire of the late Middle Ages.
With his second ensemble, Transports Publics, he explores his passion for 17th‑century chamber music.
His activities as a concert artist have taken him from Moscow to Cádiz, as well as to Peru, Colombia, the United States, Georgia, and Morocco.
Thomas has also appeared on stage in the dance productions FOI by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and En Atendant by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker.
An enthusiastic pedagogue, he teaches viola da gamba and medieval repertoire in Leuven, in Brussels, and at workshops both in Belgium and abroad. At the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles, he is a lecturer in improvisation in early music.
