Thomas Waelbroeck

Biography

Thomas began his professional musical journey with modern piano at the Conservatoire Royal de Liège, where he studied with pianist Étienne Rappe. There, he obtained his specialized master's degree in piano in 2015 with great distinction. He went on to win prizes in many competitions, including the international "EPTA Belgium" competition, the Andrée Charlier competition (second prize) and the former Dexia Classics competition (first prize).

He continued his training with internationally renowned artists such as Pierre-Laurent Aimard at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln, where he completed an Erasmus program in 2014-15. He also went to Moscow, to the Gnessin School of Music, where he worked with Natalia Zdobnova. He then widened his horizons by turning to piano accompaniment, which he studied with Philippe Riga at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles (graduating in 2019), and finally to early music. He took harpsichord and basso continuo lessons with Marie-Anne Dachy, and trained as a pianofortist in the early music department of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, where he obtained his pianoforte diploma with great distinction in 2021 under the tutelage of Claire Chevallier. Alongside his activities as a musician, Thomas is also passionate about the technical aspects of the piano, and has spent two years training as a piano technician and tuner.

Thomas is currently a pianoforte accompanist in the early music department of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, a member of the Duo Eidos with flutist Géraldine Clément, and works as a piano technician and tuner for Pianos Maene, with a particular affinity for historical instruments.
