Quand la nature se dévoile en musique - Chamber Music, Recitation and Composition Classes at the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles

November 29 2026 18:00

A travelling concert through the museum of the Institute of Natural Sciences, where music and words intertwine to celebrate the diversity of nature. Young and vibrant!

For Janequin, Rameau, Haydn, Debussy and Messiaen, nature was a source of inspiration, ranging from direct imitation (“quack quack quaaaaack!”) to the soundscape: animal cries, the rustling of the wind or the roar of the sea…

Following a major educational project bringing together the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels and the Norwegian composer Kristine Tjøgersen – who has made the links between nature and music the focus of her thesis as well as her work – the students are presenting a travelling concert that will take over every space in the iconic museum of the Institute of Natural Sciences!

Immerse yourself in the forests that animals choose as their homes (Habitat), in the non-human energy of the universe (We Carry the Sun)… Tjøgersen’s compositions will also be featured alongside a new work by Mathis Ranchon and pieces from the classical repertoire, each accompanied by a short text exploring our connection with nature – that is to say… with ourselves.

Six stations to explore in any order you choose, six ways to (re-)connect with the living world, through sound and thought!

This event is dedicated to the memory of Isabelle Van Loo, a charming and witty member of staff at the Institute of Natural Sciences, who passed away unexpectedly this summer. The Ars Musica team had enjoyed devising this project with her; she was a passionate collaborator, with a keen interest in both science and culture.
