Early Music
The Legacy of Mannheim
April 17 2026 19:00
Under the direction of Australian violinist Rachael Beesley, a specialist in classical and romantic repertoire on period instruments, students from the early music department invite you to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Mannheim court orchestra through works by Johann Stamitz, Franz Xaver Richter and Ignaz Holzbauer. Considered the best orchestra in Europe at the time, the Mannheim ensemble embodied the ideals of the Age of Enlightenment, where arts, sciences and culture came together to build a harmonious society. It was renowned for its energy, dynamic range and eloquence, and had a profound influence on 18th-century instrumental music, paving the way for future generations of classical composers.
