A native of Quebec City, mezzo-soprano Marie-Annick Béliveau studied the violin and oboe before beginning her studies in voice with Jan Simons at McGill University, where she also studied contemporary music with Bruce Mather.
She rapidly made a name for herself as an accomplished performer of the contemporary repertoire, premiering over 30 works in Canada and Europe.
In 2015, Marie-Annick performed Scelsi’s solo “performance opera” Les Chants du Capricorne, directed by Pauline Vaillancourt. Her performance was unanimously praised by critics, earning her an Opus Award for the Musical event of the year from the Conseil québécois de la musique.
Highlights in her career include the first performance of Lost by Fausto Romitelli with the Nouvel Ensemble Moderne in France, under the direction of Lorraine Vaillancourt, and Catalogue de bombes occidentales composed by André Ristic for her premiere under the direction of Véronique Lacroix and the Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal (ECM).
She sang Claude Vivier’s Wo Bist Du, Licht! in Munich with the Münchener Kammerorchester and in Montreal with the SMCQ ensemble under the direction of Walter Boudreau. The recording of this work won an Opus award for the Modern and contemporary recording of the year. She has also been singing for over 10 years with the renowned Kore Ensemble, with whom she premiered Bel Canto by Cassandra Miller.
On the opera stage, Marie-Annick’s premiere performance of the title role in Marco Pérez-Ramirez’ Rimbaud, la parole libérée at the Opéra National de Montpellier garnered her rave reviews in the international press. For Chants Libres, she also premiered the roles of Reine Poulane in Gilles Tremblay’s Opéra-Féérie and Autorité in Le Rêve de Grégoire by Pierre Michaud.
Marie-Annick’s 2016-17 season has comprised several interesting projects, including the premiere of Maxime McKinley’s Brèches opéradiques, the premiere of Sandeep Bhagwati’s Niemandslandhymnen, the repeat performance of ECM+’s hilarious TwouiiiT Opéra, which will premiere Sur le Fil by Nicolas Gilbert and Maxime McKinley and Marc Hyland’s Bonheurs. With the SMCQ ensemble she will perform Serge Garant’s majestic Chant d’Amours, and with the Ensemble Moderne, Berio’s famous Folk Songs.
Marie-Annick is also very active on the classical concert stage, singing regularly with various Montreal ensembles. This year, she will sing as a soloist with the OSM Chorus in works by Debussy and Ravel, at the Festival de Lanaudière in Le Violon Rouge, the Rossini Stabat Mater, the Rachmaninoff Vespers, and Le Petit Livre des Ravalet with Suzie Leblanc and Plaisirs du Clavecin.
Marie-Annick Béliveau is the artist in residence for Chants Libres, for whom she created, produced and performed three highly successful evening events she called “Salons de l’Ombre Jaune”: Ana et le Lion d’Or (music of Ana Sokolovic) Bel Canto au Lion d’Or (music of Cassandra Miller) and Celos au Lion d’Or (music of Marco Pérez-Ramirez).
Teaching is an important aspect of Marie-Annick’s career: she is the Associate Director of the Camp musical Père Lindsay, has taught voice at CAMMAC for over 15 years, and is a classical voice instructor at UQÀM.
Marie-Annick has also participated in several recordings, including music for the Cirque du Soleil and several films: Mourir en France, The Red Violin, and Paul à Québec. She also can be heard on Radio-Canada’s Ici Musique channel, hosting the program Place à l’Opéra.
