Lecture - Prevention of Pain in Musicians with Nathalie Roussel
Lecture
November 26 2026 19:00
Performing artists face unique artistic challenges, often accompanied by musculoskeletal disorders. The majority of musicians experience pain whilst playing, ranging from back and neck pain to discomfort in the shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers. These problems can have a significant impact on the overall musical experience. In recent years, we have gained a much better understanding of the factors influencing these disorders, particularly pain and injuries. Whilst it is well established that prolonged and repetitive movements can lead to pain and fatigue, many other important aspects are often overlooked. Our research group has conducted numerous studies to better understand pain and musculoskeletal disorders, with the aim of improving both prevention and treatment for musicians. During this lecture, we will examine the factors that may cause pain or injury, as well as those that may perpetuate painful symptoms. Furthermore, we will offer practical advice and strategies to help reduce pain in musicians.

She is the (co-)author of over 130 publications on pain from a biopsychosocial perspective. She has been awarded several national and international grants to study musculoskeletal pain. In 2021, she received the RTBF & Matière Grise Prize for her research on artists.
