Eckart Runge: Cello Masterclass
December 18 2025 09:30 > 17:00
As a soloist, chamber musician, visionary and teacher, Eckart Runge has established himself as one of the most versatile cellists of his generation.
For three decades, Eckart Runge has shaped the distinctive profile of the Artemis Quartet, with whom he has performed in major concert halls and festivals around the world. His albums, released exclusively on Warner/Erato since 2005, have received numerous awards, including the Gramophone Award, the ECHO-Klassik and the Diapason d'Or.
In 2019, Eckart Runge decided to leave the quartet and embark on new artistic challenges, pursuing his solo projects and, above all, his passion for presenting programmes that bring together various musical genres and art forms, such as classical music, jazz, rock-pop and film music.
Eckart's first solo album with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (RSB), released in 2020, includes the world premiere recording of Nikolai Kapustin's jazzy Cello Concerto Op. 85 and Alfred Schnittke's passionate First Concerto, which received the prestigious German Music Critics' Award.
Born in Heidelberg, Eckart Runge studied with Edmond Baert in Brussels and David Geringas in Lübeck. He is also inspired by the Alban Berg Quartet, Alfred Brendel, Walter Levin, Boris Pergamenschikow and György Kurtag. Several prizes won at music competitions such as the Premio Stradivari in Cremona, the Geneva International Music Competition and the ARD Music Competition in Munich marked the beginning of his active international career on stage.
As a professor at the Robert Schumann Hochschule in Düsseldorf and in international masterclasses, he passes on his experience to students from all over the world.
Eckart Runge's work as an artisan goes far beyond his commitments as a musician and teacher. He supports Yehudi Menuhin's Live Music Now, the Jeunesses Musicales of Germany and youth orchestra projects in South America, as well as Mit-Mach Musik, a social integration project for refugee children.
