Concert by the Aeterna Quartet

February 3 2026 19:00

Schubert's String Quintet D.956 (also known as the Quintet for Two Cellos) is undoubtedly one of the most moving compositions in the chamber music repertoire. Come and (re)discover it performed by the Aeterna Quartet – winner of the Espoir Prize at the Génération Classique competition at the Festivals de Wallonie, finalist in the Supernova Competition – and cellist Matis Griso – winner of the Anne and Françoise Groben Grand Prix 2024, finalist in the Young Belgian Talent Competition 2025, 1st Prize winner in the Leopold Bellan Competition in Paris – all graduates of the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles. Together, they will take you on a true musical journey, carried by the emotional richness and depth of this work of unparalleled expressiveness.

Biography of the quartet:
Julien Olive (first violin), Chloé Phelps (second violin), Adrien Fonteneau (viola), Ombeline Gasnier (cello)

Founded in September 2022 at the Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles, the quartet was born out of the joint desire of four students. Trained by Aymeric de Villoutreys (first violin of the Amôn Quartet) and with the collaboration of Guy Danel, the members share a common artistic vision, combining enthusiasm and rigour. The quartet explores a wide range of repertoires, from classical to contemporary works, with constant curiosity.

The quartet performs major works such as Schubert's Death and the Maiden, Shostakovich's Quartet Op. 110 and Mozart's Dissonances. However, it also ventures into more contemporary repertoire, participating in the Ars Musica festival in 2022 in a cultural mediation project in partnership with Bozar and in the Kronos Quartet's ‘Marathon 50 For the Future’ in 2024, during which it will benefit from a masterclass with the quartet.

He performs throughout Belgium, notably at the Musiq3 Festival in Flagey (Studio 4), but also in various recent and upcoming concerts organised by Chamber Music of Europe, Ensemble Unisson ASBL, Cultuurcentrum Schoten and the Supernova concert series. He also plays in France at the ‘Les Heures Musicales’ festival in the Oise region. In April 2024, it performed as a soloist in Olivier Penard's Les Eaux Filigranes with the Conservatoire's wind orchestra, conducted by Sébastien Billard.

The quartet won the ‘Prix Espoir’ at the Génération Classique competition at the Festivals de Wallonie in December 2024. In 2025, it was a finalist in the Supernova competition organised by the Klarafestival.
