Programme for Friday 26 April

9:30am-11am

Stravinsky: analyses and perspectives (2x 45 minutes)
Conservatoire royal de Bruxelles I Petite Salle - Rue de la Régence 30, 1000 Brussels.

Lecture 1 (9:30am - 10:15am)
Stravinsky's Octet: neoclassicism, another modernity - Patrick Valls/Aldo Platteau

By the time he was 30, Stravinsky had already demonstrated the amplitude and creative generosity of his spirit through his Russian ballets. Forever famous, recognised as an archetype of musical modernism at such a young age, how could he pursue his career as a composer? What new avenues of musical exploration should he pursue? This is the challenge posed by this masterpiece.

Lecture 2 (10:15am - 11:00am)
Rethinking The Rite of Spring: from the original work to contemporary rave culture - Katya Ev

The artist Katya Ev will present her new research on The Rite of Spring. This project transposes Stravinsky's original 1913 work to contemporary rave culture. It takes the central idea of rituality, uses institutional critique and a feminist stance as a prism, and transcends the traditional boundaries between 'high' and 'low' culture. The pioneering nature and energy of the Rite, both musically and choreographically, and the power of collective ritual with its link between humans, the earth and the sacred, inspire this research, with the desire to create a contemporary and critical version - in tune with today's cultural phenomena, artistic resources and discourse.
Katya Ev's performative practice explores institutional critique, issues of power and control, and the potential for individual action within dominant power structures in relation to specific political situations or events. Ev lives and works in Brussels, and recently completed a post-graduate residency at HISK, Ghent, after graduating from the Beaux-Arts in Paris and a master's degree in political science at Lomonossof University in Moscow. Her work has been exhibited at i.a. National Museum of Contemporary Art - EMST, Athens (2022), Netwerk Aalst (2021), MHKA (Antwerp, 2020), Palais de Tokyo (Paris, 2018), the 6th Thessaloniki Biennial (2017, parallel programme), Winzavod Art Center (Moscow, 2015, 6th Moscow Biennial, special project).
