Shostakovich was inspired to write this cycle as a tribute to Bach on the 200th anniversary of his death by the jury of the International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig in 1950. Tatiana Nikolayeva won the competition and became the dedicatee of the work, which she premiered in 1952 in St Petersburg. These 24 preludes and fugues alternate the 24 keys, alternating major and minor keys in the order of fifths. The work will be performed in its entirety!
